Thanks for visting the Land of Not Coping. You want escapism, you've come to the right place. Here you'll find a selection of original writing including poems, fanfic, short stories and other stuff. Well at the moment we don't have any new original writing so instead we decided to put up these Twelve Steps. Taken from one of my creative writing lectures, (the only notes i've typed up so far this term)these are supposed to help you in your writing. Although, according to the lecturer, each step should be followed by a mandortory unless you have a better idea. Hopefully we'll have some new fiction soon!!
The Twelve Steps
1. Show! Don't tell! Don't just tell the reader "this happened then this happened". Describe it to them as if it is happening now.
2. Campfire narrative! Make sure there is a beginning, middle and end. Not necessarily in that order.
3. Every story should have a motor e.g. money, sex or power. Wants, desires, something that you lack.
4. CONFLICT!
5. Narrative bad! Story - good! A story has motives, reasons. It tells you why something is happening.
6. Every thing that can go wrong, will go wrong! Be evil! Make things as terrible as you can for your characters.
7. Story arc where to start the story? Usually just before the main crisis.
8. The "So What?" Test Is the story worth telling? If the reader asks "So What?", then no, not really.
9. The Tabloid CreedWho, what, where, when, why and how? The back story. for a short story should occur in the 1st paragraph, or at least the first page.
10. Use the 6 senses sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing and kinaesthetics (feelings)
11. McGuffins and Gotchas
McGuffins - Think Hitchcock. The thing that drives the story. Can be an object, person, idea, anything that everybody wants, everyone has a relationship to.
Gotchas - the thing at the beginning that hooks you. But be careful that you can follow it with something bigger.
12. Click moments reader or character realisation about the plot. When they figure out that something has changed.
you can leave any feekback on our meaasage board. if you have any original writing you want putting on the site either leave word on the boards or send an email to the_kraft_diner@hotmail.com
